A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assaulting an imam at the Al-Karam Mosque in London. The Metropolitan Police responded to reports of an assault at the mosque in Katherine Road, Forest Gate, on July 22. The victim, who was leading prayers at the time of the alleged attack, suffered injuries but has been released from the hospital.
The attacker was scheduled to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on July 24. The Metropolitan Police have stated that they do not consider the incident to be a hate crime.
The mosque has expressed gratitude for the imam\’s survival and commended the police for their response. Security at the mosque has been increased, including the implementation of regulated opening and closing times during prayer sessions.
Sarah Jackson, Chief Inspector of the Met Police, said: “I know that this is an alarming incident. We are treating this with the utmost seriousness.
“Local faith officers have visited the mosque to meet those directly impacted. We are in touch with other partners to provide wider reassurance.
“Officers are also providing a high-visibility presence at the mosque for Friday prayers, and I encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak to them.”
